Minutes of the rolling thunder florida chapter 7 meeting held january 13, 2007. meeting was called to order at 10: 13am by president thompson. all were present except cob orr. a quorum was present and declared an official meeting. pledge of allegiance recited, a moment of silence of our pow mias was held, mission statement was read, members and guests were welcomed. motion to accept the minutes of the december 09, 2006 meeting as presented by director parker and seconded by director dumont. passed. treasurer's report was presented. motion to accept the treasurer's report as presented and file for audit by director parker and seconded by director ealey. passed. president thompson informed the members of the robinson funeral that several members 8 ; attended on january 12, 2007. robinson was a vietnam veteran and his son a member of rt tn3. the son requested that rt escort his father from the funeral home in brandon to bushnell national cemetery. director ealey reported that will is doing much better and his wounds are healing well. vicki gooding was in the hospital and steve melnyk will be having surgery. members were informed that if they want personal information deleted from the chapter roster, they need to contact secretary stepanek. the information is not provided to anyone other than chapter members. our chapter membership stands at 83 but several people have not paid their .00 annual dues. the va donut program continues to be going well. the embroidered golf shirts have arrived. vicki gooding wasn't present to discuss her findings with the "adopt a squad" program. input from members steered the group towards trying to take care of our own first. we have some members whose sons are presently in iraq or going back soon. the chapter will adopt their sons and provide items for them and the other members of their squads. members were asked to turn off their cell phones during the meetings. consensus was to fine members .00 if their phones ring during a meeting. three 3 ; of our four 4 ; fundraisers were sponsored by chapter members not the community. the board suggests having one 1 ; fundraiser a year and that it not necessarily be a poker chair run. poker runs are for bikers. a committee will investigate different ideas for a fundraiser. that committee will consist of rick parker chair ; , don garnett, george harris, penny thompson, and linda king will report their findings suggestions to the board by the march 2007 meeting. the board would like to look at a different venue s ; to publicize the pow mia issue and veterans. a veteran's symposium might be one way to go. there are additional businesses out there that would like to fly a pow mia flag. kathy whitley volunteered to be the chapter's pow mia flag raising committee chairperson.
Marshfield's andrew simpson had a simple reason to try the pole vault when he turned out for track and field in the seventh grade. "to tell the truth, it was a reason for me to get out of calisthenics in junior high, " simpson said. "compete and get the whole feel of the thing. finishing sixth was awesome. this year i will try to go back and get better." simpson has cleared a lifetime best of 14-0 this season and hopes to go higher at state. "i'm looking to go 14-6 or higher, " he said. "i've attempted 14-7 a couple times and gotten some good looks at it. i'm going to have to use a different pole, so i've got a whole week to practice that and hopefully it comes out for the best." he will probably have to clear 14-6 or higher to compete for the title when the competition begins friday at 10: 30 a.m. "you have to vault 15 feet at state, " said marshfield assistant coach stan solomon, who has coached the vaulters at the school for nearly 20 years. mitch withers of sunset, sam helland of centennial and michael carpenter of canby have the top seeding marks of 14-6 from their district meets, but each of them cleared 15-0 earlier this season along with adam brink of roseburg. simpson is a three-sport athlete who plays football and basketball, and ran on marshfield's 4x100 team at districts. "andrew has excellent speed for a vaulter, " solomon said. "he is probably the fastest boy vaulter i have coached. he is also doing a lot of things like hurdling, running relays, and he has been busy the past two weeks with school functions but he'll be ok. he vaulted 14-0 earlier this year and he has been looking good, so he will be ready." with all his athletic talents, simpson usually does not focus on the pole vault until spring. "it's a seasonal deal for me, " simpson said. "i'd like to do summer track, but i have summer basketball and then football comes in august and i'm always trying to get a job. i love the sport and love competing, but it kind of becomes a seasonal thing." simpson usually takes a couple of meets to get comfortable during the high school season and he can seek out the advice of teammate muriel roberge, who is the defending state girls champion in the pole vault. "usually it takes me about three weeks to get into it, " simpson said. "you forget a lot, so that is why having muriel around is great. she always knows what is going on so i can go to her and ask questions." simpson placed fourth at districts as a freshman and was second last year to earn a spot at state. now he will arrive at state as a district champion. "sometimes it helps to have that recognition, but being the underdog feels awesome, " simpson said. "the pressure is off, you feel a lot more relaxed." that is the attitude simpson hopes to take friday. "i tend to get less nervous at state, " he said.
