| We are dedicated to produce a high quality magazine, which provides all actuarial science students with a deeper insight into the "mysterious profession" actuary. actuaries process the same skill sets but different mindsets. the main theme of this magazine is to compare the mindsets of actuaries from different practices, including life, p&c, and pension. every qualified actuary acquires the fundamentals through professional examinations and education. the mindset to approach a problem, however, is likely to be different amongst actuaries, who, with the same skill sets, possess various experiences and are in different positions to exercise a wide variety of strategies. we hope to bring a fraction of these experiences from the veterans to actuarial students, and enhance the readers' comprehension of working as an actuary in the future. also, we will create an online version for this magazine and will try to enlarge the scope of our readers. if you have any interesting things to share, please do not hesitate to contact one of us.

Animals in attendance. both have spoken from the pulpit about animals that are abandoned or killed in shelters. both encourage adoptions. several members of the flock have heeded the call and rescued pets. across town at st. clement's, another episcopalian church, the pro-pet philosophy has been taken a step further. it's a world apart from holy trinity in decor and neighborhood. while the latter looks as though it was drawn from an english history book and serves an upscale neighborhood, st. clement's is in the center of what used to be called hell's kitchen and it ministers to the poor and middle class from inside a theatre. "we set up the altar on whatever set happens to be up, " tricia vivado, the former church treasurer says. "right now the set is a living room, so it's very interesting." st. clement's has a small family-like atmosphere with only about 4050 people attending the sunday service. that atmosphere lends itself well to embracing animals. like holy trinity, the policy was never planned; it began as an experiment. when the church was seeking a volunteer treasurer, vivado, who works for jp morgan in commercial mortgage finance, stepped up to the job. but loathe to leave her beloved cocker spaniel, molly, home on the weekends as well as during her normal work hours, she asked if the pooch could accompany her to the church. a vote was taken and the agreement was to try it. molly became such a fixture, greeting parishioners warmly, that others began bringing their dogs. it was soon dogma that god welcomed animals! the church is now so well known for its embrace of the animals that it's been able to open a much-needed animal clinic into the neighborhood. "we had been talking about how we'd like to establish a vet clinic for homeless people, " vivado explains. "then an article appeared in a magazine about us and money started coming in. then a veterinarian called and offered to donate her services." the clinic opened in march and will operate two saturdays a month, offering general vet care and vaccinations. the whole parish has gotten behind the effort. one attendee, a woodworker, built an exam table; another donated time to put up lights in the examination area; still others will act as vet techs. the aspca has offered to send over their mobile spay neuter van. and the church is hoping that once the word gets around, others will step forward to donate goods and services. they have set up a fund to care for animal problems in the community and hope to minister to pets in many various ways in the future. but for now, the clinic and the sunday services will be at the forefront of their efforts to embrace animals in the community. so, if you walk by a church and hear what sounds like a lot of wailing sirens, don't get confused. there's no fire at least not one that needs to be put out. just a lot of warm-hearted people and their pooches observing church policy: "dogs aloud here and learn to play video poker or game online play poker.

Paradigm for investigation: how well does the behavior of unaided decision makers compare to what a trained economist or statistician would do using prescriptive theory to make a specified decision? we will examine a prototypical study in the edwards tradition in a later chapter. however, a study by gray 1975 ; provides a quaint, if atypical, illustration of behavioral research based on the presumption that decision makers' behavior is or should be ; reflected in prescriptive theory. gray presented third-grade students with an array of six stacks of 10 cards, face down. each stack contained arithmetic problems of roughly equal difficulty for the children, and the stacks ranged from very difficult at one end of the array to very easy at the other end. the student looked at a problem from each stack and stated how many of the 10 problems he or she would solve correctly if asked to work the problems in that stack. dividing the estimate by 10 provides the student's assessment of his or her probability of success for each stack. the students' task was to select a stack from which a problem would be randomly selected for them to solve. they were told that if they selected the most difficult stack and got the correct answer, the payoff would be six red game online play poker chips, the next most difficult paid five chips, and so on down to one chip for the easiest problems. if they got the wrong answer, they had to pay the experimenter the corresponding number of poker chips; they were loaned 10 chips to start out, which were deducted from their winnings at the end of the experiment. the students' choices of problems to solve can be viewed as gambles--they could try a high-payoff difficult problem, but the odds were against getting the right answer. they could try a low-payoff easy problem, but the payoff was so low it hardly was worth the trouble. the students understood the dilemma and, in fact, selected the problems that prescriptive theory would dictate--the appropriate balance between the risk of failure and the magnitude of the payoff. it turned out that these third graders were reasonably efficient gamblers--with one exception. like real gamblers, many of the students would play conservatively for a while and then, after having built up a supply of poker chips, would take a flyer on the really difficult stack. they almost invariably lost, whereupon they would select easy problems until they had regained their fortune; then they took another flyer. the agenda that edwards 1954, 1955 ; set was to derive a psychology of decision making using prescriptive theory as a starting point, mapping the points at which observed behavior deviated from prescription, and then modifying prescriptive theory to make it descriptive of.
Explaining why things ever change, whereas zucker 1988 ; , in the same volume, felt that the key problem is how social systems maintain sorne stability p7 i think the rhetoric of institutional theory, to use dimaggio's 1988 ; phrase, is particularly good at hiding who is responsible for action. catch phrases and passive constructions disguise the need for actors who have taken an interest in a particular social construction, and lead to a neglect of the organizational entrepreneurs dimaggio, 1988 ; who create the organizations and associations that ultimately coalesce into a field. ecological models attribute agency to forces external ta organizations, and their language empowers "selection forces" as the driving force behind change. clegg 1989 ; , often using an interpretive approach, has long argued for the importance of agency, although i think he tends to overstate the extent of struggle over control in most organizations. he depicts organizations as engaged in a battle for the "hearts and minds" of employees, against other actors, such as political parties, the various organs of the state, popular discourse in the media, employer's federations, and trade unions. he recently argued clegg, 1989: 102 ; that "organization [note the singular, not the plural] encounters agency in at least two prototypic forms : the person as an agent of signification and the pers on as an agent of production. both meaning and body, fused in the person, are capacities for resisting the encroachment of organization control on the discursive play of individuals as weil as on their capacities to work"18. to achieve control, organizational elites must overcome the resistance of employees. but of course, resistance is variable, and as organizational culture theorists remind us, may be insignificant. explicit consideration of the agency and interest question raises several issues that l will address in the remainder of this paper : what model of organization is assumed by the various perspectives, to what extent do they stress competition as opposed to mutualism, and how pre-determined are outcomes ? and online play money poker.

The trinity river mainstem fishery restoration final environmental impact statement environmental impact report feis eir ; 2000 ; identified four bridges that were susceptible to impacts associated with peak fishery flow releases, the salt flat, bucktail, game online play poker bar, and biggers road bridges. adverse impacts to these bridges by flood flows, including overtopping, flooded approaches and scouring, have occurred as recently as 1997, when these bridges and or their approaches were rendered inaccessible by flood flows that severely limited residential and commercial use of these facilities for several days. the trinity river bridges project ea feir addresses the environmental issues, of the proposed action and their alternatives, and impacts associated with modification and or replacement of these four bridges on the trinity river, below lewiston dam project ; . reclamation, the blm, and trinity county county ; prepared this ea feir. reclamation will be responsible for construction of the proposed project and will function as the federal lead agency under nepa. blm will serve as a federal co-lead agency since it administers the wild and scenic rivers act for this reach of the trinity river and because it will have approval authority for project activities on public lands at the salt flat and bucktail sites. trinity county will be providing funds made available through the california department of fish and game's cdfg ; coastal salmon recovery program for construction of the salt flat and biggers road bridges. the need for the proposed action results from: the existing high likelihood of flooding pre-trinity rod ; of the four bridges and or their access roads with potential loss of property and lives as exemplified during the 1997 new year's day flood ; . the current limitation on the operation of trinity dam during periods of high inflows, which limits safety of dam water releases to the trinity river via lewiston dam to 6, 000 cubic feet per second cfs ; when the actual release capacity of the trinity dam is 13, 750 cfs. requirements in the secretary of interior's december 19, 2000, trinity river rod to restore the trinity river fishery through a combination of higher releases from lewiston dam up to 11, 000 cfs ; , floodplain infrastructure improvements including rebuilding or fortifying bridges and addressing other structures affected by the peak instream flows provided by the rod, channel rehabilitation projects, fine and coarse sediment management, watershed restoration, and an adaptive environmental assessment and management program. the directive of the united states district court of the eastern district of california, in westlands water district, et al., v. u.s. department of the interior, et al. civil action civ f 00-7124-oww dlb ; e.d. cal. ; requiring that "[a]ll non-flow measures prescribed by the rod shall proceed" while the department of interior prepares a seis to remedy the defects in the original eis prepared for the december 19, 2000, rod.
The view of an individual specialist is influenced by their role in this industry and the available resources. specialists are human but that they execute a specific role and do not consider the total picture. that role relates to control. the execution of power provides them with a living. they have to meet their other needs protection, affection, understanding, creation, participation, identity, leisure and freedom ; through other activities, which, however, play little part in their perspectives as specialists. both practitioners' and specialists' perspectives have developed over a very long time, and appear absolutely normal to them. neither perspective is focused on the objectives of sustainable development. the practitioners' perspective has an individual welfare focus. the specialists' perspective is part of the control system that is focused on the economic welfare of the nation, global customers and, increasingly in the last decade or so ; , environmental sustainability. the control mechanisms available to specialists are normative education, scientific research, general understandings, literature ; and coercion laws, rules and regulation as well as public sentiment, public relations, media and advertising ; , and the like dimaggio et al. 1991 ; . specialists copy their successful peers which reinforces successful approaches mimetic isomorphism ; . this reduces the risk of the undertaking for example, see, benchmarking, sustainable practices, cary et al. 2002, current recommended practices, sinclair knights merz 2001 ; . the specialists' and the corporations' perspectives have been very influential over the decades in establishing the systems in which the practitioners have to operate in order to meet the need they have. the specialists' perspective is not uniquely australian but is greatly influenced by the same mechanisms, normative international understanding and worldrecognised sciences ; and coercion international laws, courts, trade agreements and common trade rules - gatt, wto ; . mimetic processes include copying useful or successful arrangements from other countries. in addition, specialists, corporations and practitioners have interacted to generate systems that work. even though these systems may be in constant tension because of the changing power positions amongst the agents they still work in the sense that resources are used, national economies grow, specialist occupations expand, corporations grow and farmers mainly survive. in spite of these perspectives being very different, they do actually mesh together. however, they do not head towards achieving sustainable development ideas.
There is a remaining misfit of the cems spectrum. this means that the nitride formed in the sample is almost a single phase, what agrees well with our xrd observations. since in the fe atoms are distributed over three different sites with a 1: 2: occupation ratio, three sextets with the appropriate area ratios were used to fit the data. the line intensity ratio within each sextet was fitted to be a: with a: c close to 3: 1 and a: b close to 3: 3.5 the hyperfine parameters found from the fit are listed in table 7.2. the parameters are in good agreement with those reported in the literature see [sch95] and references therein ; . at the nitriding potential and temperature used in this experiment, the -fex n phase should be formed according to the lehrer diagram see fig. 7.2 ; . in polycrystalline fe samples covered with a ni layer the formation of nearly 100% ; of the phase was observed at the conditions used here [ini96, mar00]. however, the nitride in our sample consists for more than 95% of the -fe4 n phase. the delay observed in the phase formation is probably due to a lack of nucleation sites such as lattice defects or grain boundaries ; in the epitaxial fe layer, which causes high energy barriers for phase transitions. the importance of lattice defects during phase transformations has been proven by e.g. grujicic et al. who carried.

Written by: greg gocek, cfa reported by: greg gocek, cfa while it's not "christmas in july", summer nonetheless marks the change of season around our society with the start of the new 2006-07 fiscal program year. and while everyone could use some vacation, there's no real time off around cfasc environs as our always-diligent volunteers and staff continue to produce attractive offerings for you. so there's much organizational news, with the welcome message from new president mike lindh, annual meeting results, background on new members of our leadership team and staff, and notices about our just opened downtown office and the launch of the virtual function tickets system. there's a report on the special june career management conference, discussion of our luncheon programs and social events, and an in-depth overview of the 50th anniversary of the financial analysts seminar, organized by cfa institute with our support on the evanston campus of northwestern university. enjoy these items as part of your summertime reading! this issue's contributors were, alphabetically; shantal alonso, eric ause, jill epstein, michele gambera, greg gocek, marvin goodwin, kathy graham, joe knecht, mike lindh, randy malecki, jeff nevins, and cara norfleet taylor. co-sponsored by cfa institute and cfa society of chicago cfasc ; , the july 16th 21st financial analyst seminar fas ; on the evanston campus of northwestern university's kellogg school drew a sell-out crowd of 160 investment professionals from throughout the u.s. and 25 other countries. cfasc made substantial contributions to the event's success. our locality accounted for about 10% of registrations, provided several speakers, and was instrumental in organizing the event via cfasc participants on the fas board of regents. that support is a tradition extending back to fas origins, as a person from our society's past, the late university of chicago network and share ideas were available at meals, coffee breaks, social functions and walks between headquarters hotel and campus. there was even a field trip to the chicago mercantile exchange to simulate open outcry mock trading before it goes the way of the ticker tape! the intensity of fas is comparable to packing a year's worth of cfasc luncheon programs and educational conferences into an eventful week whose daily schedule stretched from 7: 00 until 10: 00 pm. while that sounds exhausting, the open atmosphere was quite rewarding and low key. it can even be habit-forming, as a number of attendees both presenters and audience members ; acknowledged their loyal participation at previous conclaves. in the relative anonymity of a simple fas registrant. at the july 16th kick-off dinner where cfasc president mike lindh welcomed the gathering, a group photograph from the 1950s showing warren buffet during his pre-berkshire hathaway days together with other early fas registrants was prominently displayed. the conference featured two award ceremonies. clifford asness of aqr capital management received cfa institute research foundation's james r. vertin award for a body of research of relevance and enduring value to investment professionals. a series of graham and dodd awards for excellent writing published in the financial analysts journal were also conveyed. they were in the categories of: best article to luis viceira for "term structure of the risk-return trade-off" scroll awards to steven thorley for "performance attribution and the fundamental law" and to bradford cornell for "a delegated-agent asset-pricing model" and best perspectives to atanu saha for "hedge funds: risks & return". a cfa institute publication summarizing the proceedings will be available by year's end. for now, to provide a quick overview, following are a key insight from every presentation in the order delivered ; , "snapshot coming attractions" for the upcoming official record. details on next page.
