I would like to talk briefly this month about accountability. now, this is not a new tool in the fire service but it seems to be the hardest to learn to use correctly. back when i first started oh those many years ago, accountability consisted of, "hey where is so and so?" and the response would be something like "he was inside a minute ago. don't worry he will show up when it is time to head back." fortunately most of the time it was true. they did show up when it was time to head back. but, as we know, that is not always the case. i know most of you have been given your id tags and you have been instructed that when you get on a unit you place them on the accountability passport, and place the helmet shield for that unit on your helmet. but how many of you truly do it prior to getting to the scene? and just as important how many remember to remove them when you get back to the station as well as removing the helmet shields? i have been on a few calls recently where i get a passport and there are either people that are not even on the scene on it or people that say, "i don't have my tags". if we go the true training and intent of accountability the person that does not have their tags will have to wait until a tag can be made for them by the command officer. an even worse scenario: if the person that has left their tags on the passport is not on the scene and something happens and we do a roll call. we will have to switch from the tasks that need to be done to stabilize a scene to one of a search and rescue for the missing person--who is not even actually there. the other problem we have is when people walk up to the scene and when asked for their passport they say, "oh it is back at the rig." well it doesn't do much good back there now does it? the officer in charge of the unit needs to make sure that, along with all of the other tools they bring to the command post or man power pool, they also bring one of the most important tools--their passport. running the accountability board is a true art. it doesn't mean you just put the passports on it and forget them until you hand them back to the unit officers at the end of the call. the accountability person needs to know where everyone is at any given time and move or label the passports accordingly. i believe everyone needs to learn how to use the board and the accountability system properly as you never know when you may be put in that role. as with everything, accountability techniques are constantly changing and we need to keep up with them. if you have never learned how to run accountability, please get together with a person that has done so and is proficient at it. i know emt wood is very good at it and so is ff griffey. i know he recently took some training on it and has taught me a few new things that i did not know before. if you want more training let the ac's know about it. so in closing let me say: please practice with and use the most important tool on the fire ground for us to make sure that we all go home safe.accountability and poker tournament rules.
